Compliance Monitoring Enforcement (CME) Workshop

Mr Adnan Awad represented IOI and the IUCN, in a workshop in Split, Croatia from 15 - 17 March 2011, to develop a new training course on Compliance Monitoring Enforcement (CME), as related to the implementation of the IMO Ballast Water Convention. Countries of the Mediterranean region were also in attendance to give feedback on piloted lecture material. The course is being developed in partnership with IMO-GBP, the World Maritime University (WMU), and IUCN. The Convention is aiming to reduce impacts on biodiversity from invasive species, and targets the maritime community for much of the implementation required. The IOI-SA has partnered with the GloBallast Programme of the IMO to help with technical training courses of this nature. A follow-up workshop to finalize the CME training course will be held at WMU in Malmo Sweden in June. Following this the first delivery of the course has been scheduled for September, to be held in Togo for the 16 countries of the Western and Central African Region.
