ACHIEVEMENTS

For 2005
  • Delivery of the Train-Sea-Coast course "Managing Marine Pollution";
  • Delivery of the course on "Integrated Coastal Area Management";
  • Organization and hosting of the international meeting of the SeaweedAfrica Database Project;
  • Mr Joseph Wakibia finalised his thesis and graduated with a PhD in September;
  • Staff publications of peer-reviewed scientific journal papers;
  • Staff presentations at national and international conferences;
  • Staff attendance at numerous national and international workshops and meetings;
  • Staff empowerment i.e. attendance at a number of training courses including an evacuation course amongst others;

For 2004
  • Delivery of the UNEP-GPA-UNESCO-IHE-UN/DOALOS Train-Sea-Coast course "Improving Wastewater Management in Coastal Cities";
  • Delivery of the course on "Integrated Coastal Area Management";
  • Complete revision and upgrading of the course "Managing Coastal Pollution";
  • Completion of the first phase of the Southern and East African Waste Management Network (Seawaste Network);
  • Development of the Global Invasive Species Programme web portal;
  • Practical training workshop on aspects of construction of seaweed culture rafts with the St Helena Bay Seaweed Mariculture Initiative;
  • Staff presentations at national and international conferences;
  • Staff publications of peer-reviewed scientific journal papers;
  • Election to the South African Biodiversity Information Facility Steering Committee;
  • Staff attendance at numerous national and international workshops and meetings;
  • Staff empowerment i.e. attendance at a number of training courses including project management, event management and fraud prevention amongst others;
  • Representation on the South African Network for Coastal and Oceanic Research Steering Committee and Capacity Building Task Team.

For 2003
  • IOI-SA Director’s attendance at the 23rd IOI flagship training course on Ocean Governance at Dalhousie University, Canada;
  • Publication of the West Coast Cookbook, which was awarded the prestigious Gourmand World Cookbook Award for the "Best local cookbook";
  • Completion of the first phase of the South African Coastal Information Centre with a signing of a further 3-year extension;
  • Hosted the SADC Monitoring, Control and Surveillance Programme Curriculum Development Workshop
  • Completed the Robben Island Marine Sewerage Outfall monitoring project;
  • Hosted, together with the Zoology Department at the University of Cape Town and the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity, the "Marine Biodiversity in sub-Saharan Africa: the Known and Unknown" workshop;
  • Supported our host, the Department of Biodiversity and Conservation Biology, with their yearly postgraduate field trip to the West Coast National Park;
  • Representation on the South African Network for Coastal and Oceanic Research Steering Committee and Capacity Building Task Team;
  • Staff attendance at numerous international and national workshops, conferences and meetings;
  • Office renovations and relocation.

For 2002
  • The establishment of an Advisory Board;
  • Hosted an Open Day in June 2002;
  • Organised and hosted PiM 2002 conference;
  • Institutional restructuring;
  • Procured numerous projects and related funding;
  • Represented at several international and national conferences and meetings;
  • Forged new partnerships;
  • Published a successful newsletter;
  • Attained 15-year seawater lease for the Seaweed Mariculture Operations with Maribus Industries;
  • Staff attendance at UN-DOALOS training course;
  • New Mission statement and
