ADVISORY BOARD

The IOI-SA Advisory Board was assembled to help achieve the overall mission of the Institute. The Board is intended to help guide the Institute and facilitate its progress where possible. Board members are selected by IOI-SA based on affiliation and position.

The Board is composed of between eight and twelve people. The current Board consists of:

  • The Rector of the University of the Western Cape

  • The Director of the International Ocean Institute, Southern Africa

  • A minimum of six and maximum of ten persons who are leaders in their fields and represent a cross-section of the listed sectors:

    • Mariculture

    • Education

    • Environment

    • Information and communication technology

    • Fishing Industry

    • Shipping and ports

    • Socio-economics

    • Biodiversity and conservation

    • Marine science

    • Marine and coastal management

    • Marine and environmental law

    The current Board members are:
     

  • Prof. Brian O'Connell, Rector, University of the Western Cape

  • Mr Adnan Awad, Director, International Ocean Institute, Southern Africa

  • Hon. Rejoice Mabudafhasi, Deputy Minister, Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism,

  • Mr Horst Kleinschmidt, Managing Director, Feike

  • Prof. Jan Glazewski, Professor, Institute of Marine and Environmental Law, University of Cape Town

  • Dr Derek Keats, Deputy Vice Chancellor, University of Witwatersrand

  • Prof Geoff Brundrit, Emeritus Professor, Department of Oceanography, University of Cape Town

  •  Dr Kristel Maze (seconded by Dr Tanya Abrahamse), South African National Botanical Institute

  • Mr Paul Maclons, Managing Director, Smit-Amandla Marine
