TRAINING

IOI-SA has been able to undertake a number of training activities under the auspices of the IOI-SA Training Programme. The programme develops and delivers training in support of good governance of oceans and coasts for a wide range of audiences.

Train-Sea-Coast Benguela Current Course Development Unit 
IOI-SA functions as the Benguela Current Course Development Unit for the UN-DOALOS Train-Sea-Coast Programme.

IOI OceanLearn
All training and capacity building activities of the International ocean Institute network are being joined under the brand OceanLearn, co-ordinated by the OceanLearn Implementation Committee (OLIC), on which IOI-SA serves. The OLIC guarantees a network-wide quality standard for all courses run under this brand. Course packages may be bundled to suit different requirements.

Students and Interns

IOI-SA continues to support post-graduate students and interns conducting research dissertations on marine and coastal themes within the mission of IOI-SA. The students and their respective projects were as follows:

  • Hosting of Florian Josse, an intern from the Institut des Sciences de I'Ingeneur de Toulon et du Var. Florian completed the project "River plumes modeling from Seawifs and Modis satellite data" during his internship.

  • Dr Ceri Lewis, postdoctural student. Project title: Reproductive biology and husbandry of two species of marine polychaete worms.

  • Mr Martin Cocks, PhD student. Project title: Ecological informatics: development and evaluation of web-based systems.

  • Mr Joseph Wakibia, PhD student. Project title: Linking Biology and sustainable livelihoods to the proposed establishment of community-based euchemoid farming in southern Kenya. Dr Wakibia graduated in September 2005 and IOI-SA congratulates him on his achievement.
